Garment Care
Gurl Brand pieces are built to last — but cotton needs the right care to stay at its best.
General Rules
Wash Cold
Always wash cotton garments in cold water (30°C / 86°F or below). Hot water causes shrinkage, fading, and fiber breakdown — especially on vintage-washed and acid-wash pieces.
Gentle Cycle
Use a gentle or delicate machine cycle. Aggressive spin cycles stress seams and can distort garment shape over time.
Mild Detergent
Use a gentle, dye-free detergent. Harsh detergents strip natural cotton oils and accelerate fabric breakdown. Avoid bleach entirely on colored or washed garments.
Turn Inside Out
Always wash dark or printed cotton pieces inside out. This protects graphic prints, embroidery, and any surface treatments from friction damage.
Lay Flat to Dry
Tumble drying on high heat is the single fastest way to shrink and damage cotton. Lay flat to dry, or hang on a padded hanger to preserve shape.
Low Heat Only
If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting. Remove while slightly damp and lay flat to finish drying naturally.
Iron on Low
Cotton can be ironed, but use low-to-medium heat only. Never iron directly over prints, embroidery, or embellishments — use a pressing cloth.
No Dry Cleaning
Our cotton garments are designed for home washing. Dry cleaning solvents can alter the texture of vintage-washed and garment-dyed pieces.
By Style
Vintage-Washed & Acid-Wash Pieces
These garments have already been treated to achieve a lived-in, faded aesthetic. Wash cold inside out. Do not bleach. The color will continue to soften naturally with washing — this is expected and part of the character. Avoid fabric softener, which can interfere with the washed texture.
Heavyweight Sweatshirts & Hoodies
Wash cold, gentle cycle, inside out. Due to the weight of the fabric, reshape while damp and lay flat to dry. Hanging heavy cotton while wet can distort the shoulder seams.
Knit Sweaters
Hand wash in cold water or use a wool/delicates cycle. Do not wring. Press gently to remove excess water and lay flat on a clean towel to dry. Never hang a knit garment — gravity will stretch it out of shape.
Long-Sleeve Tees & Raglan Styles
Machine wash cold, inside out, gentle cycle. These lighter-weight pieces can be tumble dried on low, but laying flat to dry extends their lifespan significantly.
Ribbed Tank Tops
Hand wash or delicate machine cycle in cold water. These fitted pieces are prone to stretching in the wash — always lay flat to dry rather than hanging.
Sweatpants & Bottoms
Wash cold, inside out. Check the care label for any style-specific notes. Wide-leg and raw-edge styles should be laid flat to dry to preserve the hem finish.
